HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR RHODE ISLAND SENIOR PORTRAIT SESSION
Senior portraits are more than just photos. They’re a celebration of your milestone year! At CMC Photography, we want every Rhode Island senior to feel confident, prepared, and excited about their session. With the right preparation, your photos will reflect your unique style, personality, and joy during this special year. Here’s everything you need to know to get ready.
PLAN YOUR OUTFITS IN ADVANCE
Outfits set the tone for your session and help you feel confident in front of the camera. Here’s what to keep in mind:
- Choose 2-4 outfits that reflect your personality. Mix casual, chic, and trend-forward looks to show all sides of you.
- Mix textures and layers to add visual interest and dimension in photos.
- Stick to one timeless look (think neutral tones) and one outfit that’s more bold or trendy.
- Don’t forget accessories! Scarves, jackets, hats, and jewelry are perfect for quick outfit changes and adding style.

COORDINATE HAIR & MAKEUP
Polished hair and makeup elevate your session and make you feel like your best self.
- Schedule hair and makeup professionally the day of or the day before your session.
- Keep your style natural and timeless for classic photos, or glam it up for Luxe sessions.
- Bring touch-up essentials like lip gloss, powder, or a comb for small adjustments during the shoot.
REST, HYDRATE, & GLOW
Confidence shines brighter when you’re well-rested and hydrated:
- Get a full night’s sleep the night before your session.
- Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your photoshoot for glowing skin.
- Avoid last minute stress…your calm, happy energy shows in every shot.
BRING PROPS OR PERSONAL ITEMS
Props are a great way to add personality and tell your story:
- Think sports equipment, instruments, favorite books, or even your pet.
- Keep props meaningful but simple. They should complement, not distract from you.
- Items like scarves, jackets, or handbags can also double as stylish accessories.
Pro Tip: Personalized touches make your senior portraits feel uniquely you!
PLAN YOUR SESSION TIMING & LOCATION
Lighting and location matter just as much as outfits and hair:
- Golden hour (early morning or late afternoon) gives the soft, flattering light every senior loves.
- Choose locations that match your style: urban streets, parks, beaches, or local landmarks in Rhode Island or Southeastern Massachusetts.
- Have a backup plan if the weather decides to be unpredictable!
Pro Tip: Check out my Senior Session Location Guide for my favorite spots in RI and SE Massachusetts.
PRACTICE CONFIDENCE & ENJOY THE MOMENT
Being relaxed and confident is key to natural photos:
- Try a few poses in front of the mirror or phone camera before your session.
- Trust your photographer!! I’ll guide you through flattering poses that feel natural.
- Most importantly, have fun! Your session is a celebration of you and your milestone year.
